A sheriff’s deputy who has been missing since Saturday night did not report to work Wednesday and could be fired for abandoning his job, said Sgt. Kim Quaco, of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s personnel division.

Samuel Abalos Valdez, 32, was absent from his job at the Santee substation and his whereabouts is still unknown, Sgt. Robbi Bethea said.

“He has not reported to work today, and basically he is OK,” Bethea said. She said Valdez had phoned in to the substation and said he would be unable to come in.

Quaco said no personnel action had been taken and couldn’t specify whether Valdez would be fired or suspended.

Valdez had told his family he was going out dancing Saturday, and was reported missing when he didn’t return home that night.
