Unseeded Jimmy Arias overpowered 13th-seeded Robert Seguso Wednesday for a 6-2, 7-6 upset victory in the second round of the Volvo indoor championships at Memphis, Tenn.

It was the fifth match of the tournament, including three qualifiers, for Arias, who fell from the top tennis rankings after reaching No. 5 in the world in 1984. He is ranked 107th. Seguso is No. 36.

“I returned serve well and that always boosts my confidence,” Arias said. “I put pressure on his serve and he was struggling to hold. That’s tough pressure for a big server like Seguso.”
