From Times staff and wire service reports

Jay Burson, Ohio State’s leading scorer, will miss the rest of the Buckeyes’ season because of a neck injury, the team physician, Dr. Robert Murphy, said today.

Burson suffered the injury Monday night in the Buckeyes’ 83-75 loss to Iowa but it was not diagnosed until Wednesday when Burson reported pain in the base of his neck, Murphy said.

Burson, a 6-foot, 156-pound senior guard, suffered a broken fifth cervical vertebra, tests at Ohio State University Hospitals revealed. The injury does not involve Burson’s spinal cord, Murphy said.

Burson will be fitted Friday with a traction brace he will have to wear for 12 weeks, a news release from Ohio State said. Burson will be discharged Saturday morning from Ohio State University hospitals and will return to his home in New Concord, Ohio. His return to school will await the approval of his doctors, the news release said.
