After 64 performances, including a Dec. 26 premiere loudly booed by Broadway critics, “Legs,” the $5-million Peter Allen musical, has posted a closing notice and will sing and dance its last on Sunday. Loosely based on the life of gangster Legs Diamond, with music and lyrics by Allen, who played Legs, the twice-postponed extravaganza had its first preview performance Oct. 18 and $10 million in advance sales. The advance wasn’t enough to survive the critics. It is closing because of what a spokeswoman on Thursday described as “insufficient business.” In addition to Allen, it had employed 35 players, 26 musicians and 37 stagehands. Its home, the Mark Hellinger Theater, will get religion next month. The Times Square Church has leased the theater and plans its first service on March 12.
