Two men were in custody Thursday night after they allegedly kidnaped a 21-year-old man sleeping in his car on San Ysidro Boulevard and made him drive them to the Los Angeles County city of Downey, police said.

Sergio Midel Canchola, 26, of Downey and Luis Gonzalez Aseves, 22, of Inglewood were arrested Thursday morning in connection with the abduction of Graciano Valencio Ruiz of Los Angeles.

According to police, Ruiz’s car overheated about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and he pulled into a gas station parking lot in the 100 block of West San Ysidro Boulevard. While waiting for the car to cool, he crawled into the back seat for a nap. Ruiz told police that as he slept, two men approached him; one put him in a chokehold while the other put a screwdriver to his neck. They stole $7 from him and made him drive north.

When they got to Downey, the men threw him out of the car, and Ruiz called the police. While officers drove Ruiz to the station for a translator, Ruiz spotted the suspects, who passed them in his car. Officers made the arrest.

Canchola and Aseves were arrested on suspicion of kidnaping, armed robbery and grand theft auto. They were being held Thursday at County Jail in lieu of $17,000 bail each.
