After a doctor’s examination Friday, the Lakers said that Magic Johnson’s partially torn left hamstring had not improved enough to allow him to play in Sunday afternoon’s nationally televised game against the Boston Celtics.

Johnson, who was injured Feb. 8, will be examined again Monday and hopes to play late next week. Dr. Stephen Lombardo reported that Johnson has shown improvement and that he will increase his exercise level in preparation for his return.
