Sailing : 150 Boats Compete in SCYA Regatta

Despite adverse weather conditions, more than 150 boats competed in 14 races in the Southern California Yachting Assn.’s annual Mid-Winter Regatta Saturday and Sunday.

In Newport Beach, the Balboa Yacht Club sponsored three classes in three weekend races, which drew 32 boats.

Among the winners were:

--Hare, skippered by Greg Pearce from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, in the soling class.

--Shy, skippered by Don Bever from the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, in the Etchells--22 Class.

--Skidoo, skippered by Paul Sharp of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, in the PHRF Class A.

--Forzado, skippered by Gedfrey Phillips of the Balboa Yacht Club, in Class B.

The Dana Point Yacht Club’s competition drew 32 entries.

Among the winners were:

--Windward, skippered by Mike Luna of the Voyagers Yacht Club in Newport Beach, in the Nonspinaker.

--Quit Cannon, skippered by Lance McCabe of the Dana Point Yacht Club, in the PHRF Class A.

--Thunder Box, skippered by Dick Amtowe of the Dana Point Yacht Club, in Class B.

--Half Fast, skippered by Tony Haines of the American Legion Yacht Club in Newport Beach, in Class C.

Races were also held at the Newport Harbor, Lido Isle and Bahia Corinthian yacht clubs.
