A man whom police suspect burglarized an East San Diego apartment that was being fumigated was in critical condition Tuesday and was not expected to live, police said.

Willie Davis Jr., 40, entered a tented, two-story apartment building in the 3700 block of 43rd Street about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said. The building was being sprayed for termites with methyl bromide. Shortly after entering, he ran out and collapsed in an alley connecting 43rd Street and Van Dyke Avenue.

Davis was taken to Villa View Hospital in critical condition, and a hospital spokeswoman said he was not expected to live.
