A neighbor rescued two men from their burning East San Diego home Tuesday, authorities said.

Frederick Perkins, who drove by and saw the building burning, broke down the front door, was driven back by the heat and then went to a side window, said Firefighter Larry Stewart. Perkins helped an elderly man out of the building and told a younger man, who was trying to put out the flames with his hands and feet, to also get out.

It took firefighters 15 minutes to control most of the flames.

The 80-year-old victim was in fair condition at UCSD Medical Center Tuesday, and the 40-year-old man was treated for burns on his hands and feet, authorities said. The names of men were unavailable.

Fire officials believe the blaze was started by a juvenile who was not trapped by the flames. Damage to the one-story home, in the 5000 block of Auburn Drive, was estimated at $12,000.
