Hospital Corp. of America: The Nashville, Tenn.-based hospital and health-care concern’s 1988 earnings totaled $258.8 million, contrasted with a 1987 loss of $58.4 million. Revenue for 1988 fell 12% to $4.1 billion. HCA’s 1987 results included income taxes of about $141 million resulting from the sale of 104 hospitals, pretax charges of $126 million to write down its investment portfolio and certain properties, along with a $73-million charge to increase its allowance for doubtful accounts.
