JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Police said today that a 13-year-old girl was killed in an attack on a Soweto home that may be linked to the controversy surrounding Winnie Mandela.
The killing late Wednesday was the fourth in the past two months that has involved people connected directly or indirectly to Mandela and her unofficial group of bodyguards known as the Mandela United soccer club. Police said gunmen fired on the house with an AK-47 assault rifle and set the dwelling ablaze with a firebomb. The name of the slain girl was not released. A few hours before the attack, an occupant of the house was detained in connection with the killing last week of Maxwell Madondo, a member of Mandela United, police said. They said the latest violence may have been a revenge attack.
