The City Council unanimously approved an ordinance banning the sale and possession of semiautomatic assault weapons. Councilman Paul Koretz said West Hollywood is the first city to adopt such an ordinance without a major shooting incident involving such a weapon.

At least seven other California cities, including Bellflower, Carson, Compton, Gardena, Lynwood, Stockton and Los Angeles, have passed ordinances banning the weapons.
