Computer Giants Join Forces: Computer vendors Digital Equipment Corp. and Tandy Corp. joined software suppliers Santa Cruz Operation Inc., Relational Technology Inc. and Locus Computing Corp. to promote a standard set of software guidelines for the popular Unix computer operating system. The computer operating environment, Open Desktop, includes a set of guidelines and tools for developing Unix software programs. Unix is a software system that controls the operations of many technical workstations and high-powered personal computers. Open Desktop will make it easier for software companies to develop applications software for Unix that perform like IBM-compatible personal computer systems, analysts said.
