San Diego State will play the rest of the basketball season without junior guard Michael Best, who was dropped from this year’s team for unspecified “medical reasons,” the university said.

Coach Jim Brandenburg, who made the decision today to remove the Aztecs’ second-leading scorer, refused to say why he suspended Best.

“Mike’s still enrolled in school, and as far as I know, he’ll finish out the school year and work on his academics,” Brandenburg said from Albuquerque, N.M., where the Aztecs play a Western Athletic Conference game tonight against New Mexico.

Best, a transfer from Clemson, did not accompany the team on its season-ending road trip to New Mexico and Texas-El Paso.

Brandenburg said he isn’t sure whether Best, who had started every game this year, will be allowed to rejoin the Aztecs next season. “That will be determined later,” Brandenburg said.
