Chip Initiative Urged: An electronics industry group is urging large-scale re-entry by U.S. companies into the global market for computer memory chips. The initiative, which could involve outlays of billions of dollars to regain a significant share of a market that up to now has been largely conceded to the Japanese, was announced by the board of the Semiconductor Industry Assn. “A stable and reliable source of DRAMs (dynamic random access memory chips) is essential to meet the critical technology needs of the U.S. electronics and defense industries,” the group said.
