Playing With Dolphins : Tropical Retreat

Share

The peaceful Zihuatanejo port stop on Madera Bay was mentioned in Horace Sutton’s article, “In a Luxury Villa Overlooking Calm Madera Bay” (Jan. 29). This brought to mind the Villa del Sol, another legend tucked away as a tropical retreat for visitors along the Mexican Riviera. Less than a dozen years back it was just sprawling beach land along Las Gatas Bay, discovered by German engineer Helmut Lein, who built the out-of-the-way inn with small villas and one palm-thatched palapa. He has personal attention for guests and serves two meals a day, including grilled snapped cooked on hot coals, with German potato salad and a starter of ceviche abulun . Warmth and friendliness blows in on soft air from the bay and sangritas (sangria and tequila) are enough to make one stay as long as possible. Plus terrace and hammocks and your own beach robes to lounge in. The address is Zihuatanejo, Gro. 40880 Mexico.

Five minutes from the airport.
