Shapcott of USIU Wins Golf Title

Allison Shapcott of U.S. International University shot a 54-hole total of 219 Sunday to set a tournament record in winning the individual title at the Patty Sheehan Invitational women golf tournament in Monterey, Calif.

Shapcott, a senior, shot rounds of 74-71-74 to break the record of 221 held by three golfers. USIU finished eighth with a total of 936 in the 15-team tournament. Texas won the team title with 898 and USC was second at 902. Amy Fruhwirth of Arizona State finished second to Shapcott at 221.

BASEBALL

J.J. Fisher struck out 14 and went the distance to lead UC San Diego to a 6-0 victory over visiting Philadelphia College. Fisher (1-0) walked two and allowed four hits and Gary Fessia hit a solo home run for the Tritons, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III.

Fessia was two for two and Karl Friedl was two for four for the Tritons (8-4). Philadelphia was playing its season opener.

DIVING

Kristen Walls, a senior at Monte Vista High School, swept all four of her events at the Southern California Indoor Diving Championships at UC San Diego.

Walls won the one and three-meter titles in the 16-18 junior Olympic age-group category and the one and three-meter titles in the senior open division.
