After a decline between 1982 and 1983, spending in the county’s apparel shops has been steadily climbing. There was a 12% increase between 1986 and 1987. The combined expenditures for the first two quarters of 1988 (the latest information available), $382,143,000, project to $764,286,000 for the full year 1988--only a 1% increase from 1987. This, of course, does not take into consideration holiday spending.

1987: $755,193
