Local News in Brief : Abalone Cove Beach Renamed
- Share via
The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council on Tuesday renamed Abalone Cove Beach the Abalone Cove Shoreline Preserve to more accurately reflect its nature.
The shoreline at Abalone Cove is rugged rather than sandy, and thick kelp in the surf keeps most swimmers on shore. “We didn’t want people reading ‘beach’ on a map and coming with their suntan oil and lawn chairs expecting to sun and swim,” Redevelopment Agency engineer Jon Taylor said in a telephone interview after the meeting. “The name really didn’t represent what the area really was.”
Abalone Cove was transferred from the county to the city a year ago. The council took action in its role as the Redevelopment Agency.
