The chairman of the House bank committee called today for the resignation of federal savings-and-loan regulators after hearing a government report that the thrift crisis could have been handled more efficiently.

Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez (D-Tex.), chairman of the House Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs Committee, which is conducting a field hearing on thrift problems, has been critical of M. Danny Wall, the chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.

“I just feel . . . the Congress, and therefore the public, have been disgracefully misinformed. The persons responsible should step aside at this time,” Gonzalez said.
