From Times staff and wire service reports

An Air Ontario jet with 69 people aboard crashed today shortly after taking off from Dryden airport, an airline official said.

Paul McKnight, vice president of the Toronto-based regional carrier, said some people survived the crash, but he couldn’t say how many. CKPR radio, which had reporters at the scene, said about 30 people were taken to a hospital. McKnight said there was a fire aboard the plane, but it was not immediately clear whether the fire occurred before or after the crash.
