LOCAL : OC Man Held in Motorcycle Death

A Huntington Beach man is being held on suspicion of manslaughter and drunk driving after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into the rear of a van, killing his woman passenger.

Mark Byres, 31, of Huntington Beach was driving south on Golden West Street near Warner Avenue about 7:15 p.m. Thursday when his motorcycle hit the back of a Dodge van. The woman passenger--whose identification was withheld pending notification of family--was thrown from the bike. She died three hours later at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center. Byres is in the custody ward at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he is in fair condition with a broken ankle.
