Man Killed While Stalled on Freeway
California Highway Patrol officials were investigating Saturday a traffic accident that killed a 21-year-old San Diego resident, authorities said.
Lewis Velazquez was standing in front of his car, disabled in the fast lane on southbound Interstate 5 north of E Street in Chula Vista, when another car smashed into his.
The second car, driven by Jan Chabot, 22, of Imperial Beach, was traveling 70 m.p.h. when it rear-ended Velazquez’s car about 3:20 a.m. Saturday, police said.
Because of the impact, Velazquez’s car ran over him, authorities said. He was pronounced dead on arrival at UC San Diego Medical Center.
Chabot was taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital with minor injuries.
