Small Lots, Big Houses

Huge houses on tiny lots may be OK for some areas, but the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors doesn’t think they make sense in the Topanga Canyon communities of Glenview, Sylvia Park, Fernwood and Topanga.

The board has directed county planners to develop a Community Standards District for a 4-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Blvd. A recent planning study found that construction of oversized houses on tiny hillside lots increases existing traffic and landslide and sewage disposal problems.

“There are some instances where virtually the whole lot except for our setbacks is covered with the structure,” said regional planner Ron Hoffman.
