Bobby Nichols’ five-under-par 67 wasn’t much when compared to his first-round 62. Still, his total of 129 gave him the lead in the $300,000 Arizona seniors tournament at Phoenix.

Bruce Crampton, who started the day five stokes back, shot a 64 to move within two strokes of Nichols at 131.

Bob Boldt matched Nichols’ course record with a 10-under 62 and was three strokes back at 132, tied with Gene Littler, who shot a 65. Miller Barber and Al Geiberger were next at 133.

Defending champion Severiano Ballesteros of Spain, recovering from the flu, shot a 79 for 224.
