Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Man Killed on Freeway May Have Leaped Down
- Share via
Costa Mesa police are investigating as a possible suicide the death of a man who might have jumped off the Bristol Street overpass onto the San Diego Freeway early Sunday.
The man has been tentatively identified as John Warren Moneypenny, 57, a transient, Lt. Sam Cordeiro said.
Positive identification was difficult because the man was hit several times by cars, he said.
The incident occurred about 2:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes. No witnesses saw how the man got onto the freeway, but he might have jumped from the overpass, Cordeiro said.
Police contacted Moneypenny’s wife, a Costa Mesa resident, who said that they had been estranged for 6 years and that her husband had talked about suicide in the past, according to Cordeiro.
