In response to Jonathan Rauch’s column “GOP Shows New Social Concerns--the Approved Antidote is Capitalism,” Opinion, Feb. 26:

As insightful as it was to understand that the issues of “poverty illiteracy, drugs,” and others are endangering the economic well-being of the American states, some obvious questions need answering.

--Why doesn’t someone inform President Bush and Gov. George Deukmejian of this? Their blatant disregard for the welfare of their constituents is not only appalling, but is also economically amiss.

--Do they honestly believe that their roundabout formula, that of attaining economic prosperity to cure these social ills, is going to effectively produce change in this suffering culture?

The Republicans should be applauded for their efforts at promoting the economic status of the U.S., but claims attending to their good will for the socially afflicted is beyond their goals and intentions.
