Prep Roundup : Nevin Helps El Dorado Gain Split

Phil Nevin hit a pair of home runs but El Dorado High School still had to rally for a run in the seventh inning to beat Ocean View, 6-5, in the second game of a nonleague baseball doubleheader Monday at Cal State Fullerton.

Ocean View won the first game, 2-1.

Nevin and Dave Moore hit solo home runs in the third inning for El Dorado and then Nevin hit a two-run home run in the fifth to tie it, 5-5. It was still tied when Nevin walked with one out in the seventh.

Bruce Petillo then singled. Matt Luke walked to load the bases and Greg Fife walked to force home the winning run. Shane Borowski (1-1) pitched the final three innings for the victory.

Ocean View scored two runs in the seventh inning of the first game to win.

In other nonleague baseball:

University 3, Woodbridge 1--Kevin Squires (1-0) had 10 strikeouts and allowed one hit in six innings for visiting University at Alton Park in Irvine. Jason Williams allowed an unearned run in the seventh but got his first save.

Brain Vail singled, went second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Trent McGinn in the first of University. McGinn scored on a double by Dave Deiter. McGinn singled and scored on an error in the seventh.

Estancia 13-9, Los Amigos 5-8 (second game, nine innings)--Jason White hit a one-out double down the left-field line to score Clayton Nelson with the winning run in the ninth inning of the second game to give Estancia a sweep.

In the first game, Sean Nichols had two singles, a double, scored two runs and drove in four runs for host Estancia (4-2).

Troy 8, Santiago 7--Troy catcher Darby Carmichael threw out the potential tying run at third base in the seventh inning for visiting Troy (2-1). Carmichael had three hits, including a solo home run and a double, and scored three runs. Steve Friedrich had a two-run homer for Troy. David Smith had two hits, including a three-run home run for Santiago.

In the Serra tournament:

Orange Lutheran 7, Aquinas 7 (7 innings, darkness)--Aquinas scored three runs in the sixth to tie host Orange Lutheran, 7-7. Mike Rossi had three doubles for Orange Lutheran, which had seven doubles.

In nonleague softball:

Fountain Valley 4-7, Garden Grove 0-1--Rae Rice pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game for host Fountain Valley. Janet Miyahara pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts in the second game for Fountain Valley (4-1-1). Rice had three hits and four RBIs in the second game.

In nonleague golf:

El Modena 170, Garden Grove 181--Eric Casey and Shaun Ruetz each shot a one-over par 32 to lead El Modena at Ridgeline Country Club.

Corona del Mar 195, Trabuco Hills 225--Jeff Tatch shot a one-over par 37 to lead host Corona del Mar at Newport Beach Country Club.

Edison 281, Newport Harbor 288--Levi Kennedy shot a four-over-par 52 to lead Edison (1-4) at Costa Mesa Golf Course.

In nonleague tennis:

Woodbridge 10, Newport Harbor 8--Chris Emery and Eric Berg won, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3, for Woodbridge.

Sonora 10, Valencia 8--Matt Rice swept, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, and Alan Entin and Robert Shen swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, for host Sonora (6-1).
