Champions Cup Men’s Tennis Tournament : Top-Seeded Becker Sweeps Visser in Second Round at Indian Wells

Boris Becker’s home is near the 10th hole of the Palmer Course at PGA West. Becker said he plays golf.

“Badly, but I try,” he said.

Becker played tennis quite well Tuesday in his second-round match against Danie Visser of South Africa in the Newsweek Champions Cup. Although Becker’s 6-3, 6-4 victory fell short of ruthless efficiency--the West German converted only two of 12 break points--it was still a good start after a first-round bye.

“I made it more difficult than it should have been,” the top-seeded Becker said. “But he is a dangerous player.”

Second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden also played his first match and scored a 6-4, 6-4, victory over Horst Skoff of Austria. Edberg broke serve once in each set.

“I didn’t do anything fancy,” said Edberg, who also defeated Skoff last week at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Edberg, whose next opponent is Michael Chang, whom he also defeated last week, was asked whether playing opponents in consecutive weeks was difficult.

“If I keep winning, I don’t mind,” he said.

Ninth-seeded Aaron Krickstein lost to 17-year-old Pete Sampras of Rancho Palos Verdes, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6. The match turned in the first tiebreaker when on match point, Krickstein served an apparent ace, but it was called out. “That was pretty much the match,” he said. “The serve was right on the line.” Said Sampras: “It’s not my job to call the lines. If the umpire sees it out, he calls it out. Fortunately, he did.”
