A judicial report has concluded that an air-to-air missile brought down an Italian airliner that crashed in the sea near Sicily on June 27, 1980, killing all 81 people on board, Italian newspapers reported. According to newspaper reports, a team of six crash and explosive experts concluded the missile hit the DC-9 airliner between the pilot’s cabin and the right side wing. Shrapnel was found embedded in luggage, a baggage door and an interior bulkhead. The reports said the experts had been unable to identify the nationality of the fighter plane that launched the missile partly because of mysterious gaps in military radar records.
