A police officer pleaded not guilty Thursday to misdemeanor charges of assaulting a handcuffed man who had just been arrested.
Jeffery M. Jacob, 34, a three-year San Diego Police Department veteran, is accused of using a soda can to strike a man being held in handcuffs Oct. 1 on Ocean Front Walk in Mission Beach.
Jacob is still on active duty, according to Police Department officials.
The alleged victim, Christopher Del Larsen, filed a citizen’s complaint against the officer.
Jacob has denied all charges, saying that Larsen was drunk at the time of his detention.
Jacob, who did not appear before a judge Thursday, is the third police officer now facing charges of assault while on duty.
