Churches Will Begin Celebration of Holy Week

Share

Holy Week observances in Protestant, Episcopal and Catholic churches will begin Sunday with services and Masses recalling the gospel stories of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem.

Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday in Catholic parishes, marks the start of Jesus’ last week in liturgical rites, climaxing with Resurrection celebrations on Easter morning, March 26.

Many churches will have services Thursday commemorating Jesus’ last meal with his disciples. Good Friday services the next day recall the Crucifixion as drawn from accounts in the four New Testament Gospels.

Some churches use the Easter season to raise extra money for charities. For instance, Glendale Presbyterian Church, which set a goal of $11,000, planned to distribute 40% of donations to the Salvation Army, 30% each to the inner-city ministries of World Impact Inc. to Union Rescue Mission.

Besides special musical programs in many churches, St. Ambrose Catholic Church in West Hollywood will perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The 3 p.m. performance this Sunday includes in its cast many professionals.
