Master Tale Spinners at Area Libraries on Sunday

Master storytellers from all over the United States are gathering here this weekend for several days of storytelling and to teach their craft to educators and librarians. Parents and children are invited to hear these tale spinners at several local libraries Sunday afternoon. Most of the events are free; admission fees are listed for those that are not.

At Watts Tower Art Center, 1727 E. 107th St., Jackie Torrence from North Carolina plans to tell the kind that really have some meat in them, the kind that take half an hour or more to tell properly. She will begin at 2 p.m. and spin yarns until 5 p.m. Reservations are not required. Information: (213) 569-8181.

Larry Littlebird will spin stories from his childhood spent on a Pueblo reservation at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Long Beach Library, 101 Pacific Ave. No children younger than 3. Phone reservations should be made today: (213) 437-2949.

Spencer Shaw, a professor emeritus at the University of Washington, will entertain with longer, classic stories in the community room of Cerritos Library, 18025 Bloomfield Ave., at 2 p.m. Reservations are required: (213) 924-5776.

Joe Hayes offers bilingual storytelling in English and Spanish at noon and 2 p.m. in the Louis B. Mayer Performance Space of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum, 310 N. Main St. He will tell Indian, Mexican and Anglo stories of the Southwest. Reservations are not required. Museum admission is $4. Information: (213) 687-8801.

Brenda Wong Aoki, in traditional Japanese dress, will tell classical Japanese legends at the Friends’ Hall of the Huntington Library, 1151 Oxford St., San Marino, at 2 p.m. Parking reservations are required: (818) 405-2141 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.
