Thousands of Muslims paraded through author Salman Rushdie’s hometown of Bombay, India, in a 10-mile march demanding a judicial inquiry into the police killings of 13 people during a protest against Rushdie’s novel, “The Satanic Verses.” And in Tehran, Iran’s state-run media said Britain suffered a severe defeat at the Organization of the Islamic Conference meeting last week in Saudi Arabia, when the Muslim leaders condemned Rushdie, even while stopping short of supporting Iran’s call for Rushdie’s death. Many Muslims find the novel blasphemous.
