Muses Shining Up an Apple for Cal State’s Reynolds

Chancellor Dr. W. Ann Reynolds of the California State University system will be saluted as The Muses’ (of the California Museum Science and Industry) 25th Woman of the Year on March 29.

Festivities will be at Century City’s J.W. Marriott’s Grand Salon. Chairman Denny Shane Miller is calling it a “Magic Carpet” luncheon because proceeds will “unlock the doors to the fascinating world of science for more young students.”

UPSCALE: Plans are moving right ahead for the Sephardic Hebrew Academy’s tribute to Wallis Annenberg, daughter of Walter Annenberg, former Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s. Elie and Michele Atias hosted the kickoff reception of the scholarship fund campaign at their Beverly Hills home. Bob and Beverly Cohen, Four Seasons owners, chair the May 31 benefit, and they’re holding it at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom to accommodate the expected crowd.

Officially, Wallis will receive the third annual Yehuda Halevi Award. James Stewart will be tribute chairman. Ali MacGraw will be mistress of ceremonies with Joan Rivers, toastmistress, and Michael Feinstein, entertainer. Of course, the whole lineup will be entertaining.

RED LETTERS: Big Sisters of Los Angeles go black-tie to their Spring Fever dance Wednesday at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Lilly Lee co-chairs with entrepreneur Nathan Shapell. Three women to be honored are Maude Chasen, owner of Chasen’s, Sister Magdalen Coughlin, president of Mount St. Mary’s College, and Dolores Sanchez, newspaper publisher. In addition, Robert and Kay Dockson will be named Couple of the Year. He is the former chairman of California Federal Savings & Loan. . . .

Members of the Hathaway Auxiliary host “Koalas, Kangaroos and Kids: An Australian Gala” to benefit Hathaway Children’s Services on April 1 at Culver Studios in Culver City. The event honors the achievements of Olivia Newton-John and her business partner, Pat Farrar, co-founders of the Koala Blue clothing stores. . . .

Susan Chalek and Loree Myers co-chair the annual Celebrity Mother-Daughter Fashion Luncheon fund-raiser Thursday at the Beverly Hilton for the Women’s Council of the Young Musicians Foundation. Nearly 50 celebrity models and their offspring will model clothes from Torie Steele Boutique in Beverly Hills in a show produced by Randy Doney.

TIFFANY TIME: Happy and Frances Franklin and Roberta Herbison, vice president of Tiffany & Co., hosted a dinner party at the Bistro Gardens to honor the Archduke Dr. Geza von Habsburg of Switzerland, in town to promote the 150th anniversary of Patek Philippe and the exhibition of 300 collectors’ watches to be auctioned in Geneva by Habsburg, Feldman Fine Art Auctioneers on April 9.

INGENUITY: It looks as though the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens is adding another jewel to the crown--food service by one of Southern California’s most popular caterers, Rococo. The company has been hired to operate the Patio Restaurant between 1 and 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, and special luncheons will be catered for groups visiting the gardens. Tea--English, Oriental and California--is on the agenda. The grand opening won’t be until June, however.

EGG HUNT: Add to the Huntington’s coming event, the Junior Fellows Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday for its members, who are also hard at work on their Arabella Ball on June 17.

LUNCHEON CHAT: Joanne Kendall of Montecito had lots to say about the fun Mary McFadden-John Saladino seminar for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art when she lunched at Ma Maison Sofitel with a bunch of pals including Joan Mackey, Maggie Edwards, Audree Penton, Joann McGarty and Margaret Nutt.

Owner Patrick Terrail sent them all off with laughs and rolls of French bread, but not before Standish K. Penton Jr., director of the front office and Audree’s son, paid a visit.

PLAUDITS: To the Arts Consortium reception at the Times Mirror Co. Harry Chandler Auditorium in honor of Adolfo V. Nodal and Rodney Punt, general manager and assistant general manager, respectively, of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. . . .

To the Assistance League of Southern California’s newest auxiliary, the VIP Auxiliary (Volunteers in Professions). There are 30 charter members. . . .

To the Muses 100 and the Patroness Circle first anniversary. They have a champagne birthday party Monday at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert. There will be greetings from Erna Schulhofer and Ernest W. Hahn, an address by Carolyn Ahmanson and a fashion show by Bullocks Wilshire. Luncheon will be served on stage.

APOLOGIES: The late John Jay Baumgartner Jr., well-known rancher and member of one of Orange County’s founding families, was called a “friend of the family” in an item about the Roundup at Rancho Mission Viejo in On View on March 9. He was a first cousin of Richard J. O’Neill and Alice O’Neill Avery.
