From Times staff and wire service reports

U.S. officials today revised the toll from the crash of a CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter to 19 Marines killed and 16 injured, and said the troops were from Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Marine spokesmen at first said 22 were killed in the crash, but later lowered the figure, citing confusion in early reports from the crash site. The troop-carrying CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter crashed near the port of Pohang on the southeast coast while taking part in exercises with South Korean forces. Nine of the injured were listed in very serious condition with burns, hospital officials said. The infantrymen aboard the helicopter were from the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton.
