Record cold weather chilled the upper Midwest on the last day of winter, while snow fell in parts of the West. Afternoon temperatures were generally below freezing from Montana through the Great Lakes to northern New England. Marquette, Mich., registered minus 11, shattering a record of 2 degrees below zero for the day set 25 years ago. Other records broken or tied were in Alpena, Mich., (7 below), Green Bay, Wis., (5 below), Muskegon, Mich., (5 above), Rochester, Minn., (5 below) and Traverse City, Mich., (4 below).
