WASHINGTON — Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte arrived Wednesday for treatment of terminal liver and stomach cancer, and one of his aides said the leader’s health had deteriorated significantly.
Duarte entered Walter Reed Army Medical Center for tests and evaluation, said hospital spokesman Pete Esker.
In El Salvador, an aide who asked not to be identified told United Press International: “Duarte’s condition is very grave. He is seriously ill.”
The aide said Duarte was accompanied by his wife, Ines Guadalupe Duran de Duarte, and his personal physician, Dr. Jose Luis Saca.
Duarte, 62, was diagnosed with cancer last June and given six months to live.
