Mary Ellen Blanchard set her third American record of the week in the U.S. Swimming Short Course National Championships at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Blanchard, the 15-year-old granddaughter of 1945 Heisman Trophy winner Doc Blanchard, broke Tracy Caulkins’ eight-year-old American mark in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.08 in the preliminaries. Nine hours later, she won the event in 1:00.66.
Blanchard came back to win the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.66, the second-fastest time in American history, only 43 minutes after her breaststroke victory.
She capped off her evening by anchoring the Dynamo’s Swim Clubs 400-yard freestyle relay team to a fifth-place finish in a time of 3:26.72.
