Bangladesh Government Releases 619 Prisoners

DHAKA, Bangladesh —
The government said it released 619 prisoners from jails across the country on Saturday, the eve of the anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Many of those released were detained under the 1974 Special Powers Act, which allows the government to detain political activists for a year without trial.
