Gov. Deukmejian on State Budget and Times Response
I applaud your editorial response to Deukmejian’s budget letter. You rightfully point to Proposition 13 as a major cause of our economic impasse.
How many people remember Proposition 8, which was on the same 1978 ballot? It would have cut property taxes 37%, instead of the 57% of Proposition 13. But it would have saved our essential services, from trauma centers to beaches and parks.
Alas, the voters of California were too shortsighted, selfish or whatever.
