AUCKLAND, New Zealand — A United Airlines jumbo jet flying 301 passengers to Honolulu was forced to return to New Zealand today with engine problems.
The pilot shut down an engine while still climbing out of Auckland after he received indications that it was not working properly, United Airlines spokesman Sean McNamara said. The pilot dumped part of the fuel and flew the Boeing 747 on the remaining three engines, landing 35 minutes after taking off.
McNamara said he did not know the aircraft’s age.
Last month nine passengers were sucked to their death when a United Airlines 747 flying the same route but in the opposite direction lost a cargo door and part of the fuselage was ripped away over the Pacific.
