Former Padre Jones Fails to Make Yankees

Jimmy Jones, a former Padres’ pitcher, and Bob Geren, a catcher from Clairemont High School, were sent Monday to the New York Yankees’ minor-league complex for reassignment.

Jones, acquired last fall in the multiplayer trade for Jack Clark, was 1-1 in five games this spring with a 3.65 earned-run average.

“This is the first spring training I didn’t think I had to worry about my job,” Jones said. “I thought I was part of the rotation, and then they told me to pitch in relief. I said fine, at first, but then I wondered what my role would really be.”

“We saw enough of him out of the bullpen to know he’s got to be a starter,” said Yankee Manager Dallas Green, who added that there just wasn’t room in the rotation.

Geren, a No. 1 pick of the Padres in the 1979 free-agent draft, batted .333 in eight games with one home run and six RBIs. But the Yankees already had catchers Don Slaught and Jamie Quirk.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Mitch McMullen, San Diego State University center, will play in the Orlando All-Star tournament in Florida April 13-15, the school announced Monday.

McMullen, who averaged 14.6 points and 7.9 rebounds, is one of 36 college seniors who will play in the prestigious four-team tournament.

Aztec forward Shawn Bell will take part in the first college basketball slam-dunk contest Sunday in the Seattle Coliseum a day before the NCAA championship game.

SOFTBALL

Stacie Sasaki pitched her first career no-hitter as UC San Diego shut out Augsburg (Minn.), 2-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. Sasaki scored an eighth-inning run in the second game to help the Tritons (14-4) win, 1-0.

Sig Huber defeated Brian Brown, 6-2, 6-2, to lead UC San Diego (6-8) past Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 5-4, in La Jolla.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene College (6-7) won five of six singles matches in defeating Southern Colorado, 7-2. The Crusaders’ Kim Wright and Cyndi Lusink won in straight sets.
