CALIFORNIA - News from March 29, 1989

Riley P. Bechtel, 37, has been elected president and chief operating officer of Bechtel Group Inc., San Francisco, becoming the fourth generation of his family to assume the presidency of the 90-year-old international engineering-construction firm. His predecessor, Alden P. Yates, 60, assumes the new position of vice chairman, and will continue as chairman of the executive committee. Stephen D. Bechtel Jr., 63, remains chairman and chief executive. Riley Bechtel previously was executive vice president.
