Fisher Leads UCSD to Sweep of Doubleheader

J.J. Fisher pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight against Menlo College in the first game of UC San Diego’s baseball doubleheader sweep Wednesday at Menlo Park.

The Tritons won the first game, 3-0. In the second game, UCSD scored a run in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory.

Erik Judson scored three runs, drove in two, hit a home run and went two for three for the Tritons (14-9) in the second game, in which freshman Daryl Martin picked up his first college victory.

Scott Coutts went three for five as U.S. International defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-2, at Dominguez Hills. USIU improved to 11-21. Dominguez Hills is 12-12.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Jennifer Larking of the University of San Diego picked up the only singles victory in the Toreras’ 5-2 loss to Arizona State in Tempe.

USD’s other victory came in doubles, where Jill Greenwood and Sakolwan Kacharoen won in straight sets. The Toreras dropped to 15-6.

SOFTBALL

Oregon pitcher Sandy Wiese won twice as the fourth-ranked Ducks defeated host USIU, 3-0 and 3-1, in a doubleheader.

Wiese allowed seven hits as Oregon improved to 29-7. USIU’s Nora Flores took both losses as the Gulls dropped to 12-18-1.

USD (14-14) swept a doubleheader from Augsburg College, winning the first game, 10-2, and the second, 14-7.

P.J. Myers went four for four in the first game with two doubles and a triple. She scored two runs and had six RBIs.

Augsburg scored seven runs in the first two innings of the second game, but Jeanne Weinsheim entered in the second inning to shut out Augsburg the rest of the way. Angie Rais drove in the winning run in the third.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State’s Joe McDonough and Bill Kearsley won their seventh consecutive singles matches, but the Aztecs were defeated by Nebraska, 5-4, at SDSU. The Aztecs (8-11) split their singles matches. Jeff Belloli was the other SDSU winner.

Nebraska (11-4) took two of the three doubles matches.
