The strongest earthquake to be recorded in Soviet Armenia since the December quake that killed more than 25,000 people rocked the same region but killed only cattle, Tass reported today.

The news agency said the quake, which measured up to 7.5 on the 12-point Soviet scale, hit at 8:36 p.m. Thursday. The December quake measured more than 10 points on the Soviet scale. The epicenter of Thursday’s quake was between the city of Leninakan, which was largely destroyed in December, and the town of Gukasyan. About 270 head of cattle were killed, and some buildings weakened by the major tremor were destroyed. Since December’s quake there has been a series of aftershocks in the area.
