LOS ANGELES CAMPAIGN ’89 : CITY COUNCIL RACES

Laura Lake, a neighborhood environmental activist and 5th District candidate opposing Zev Yaroslavsky, has received the endorsements of the Women For, Women’s Campaign Fund, National Women’s Political Caucus and the Westside Democratic Club.

A 5th District candidates forum will be held today at noon at the UCLA Tennis Stadium, near Circle Drive West and Strathmore Drive (parking lots 6 or 8).

Ryan Snyder, an urban planner and another 5th District candidate, will speak to UCLA students Thursday at noon, Meyerhoff Park on the school’s campus.

Bernie Lohr-Schmidt, attorney and 13th District candidate, received the endorsement of the United Filipino-American World War II Veterans Assn.

The San Fernando Valley Branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People will conduct a candidates forum tonight at 7 p.m. at the San Fernando Valley Boys and Girl’s Club, 11251 Glenoaks Blvd., Pacoima. Candidates for mayor, the 7th Council District and the Board of Education will be there.

SCHOOL BOARD RACE

A “Meet the Candidates” night with candidates from the 2nd District is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Fairfax High School, 7850 Melrose Ave.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE RACE

Mary Louise Longoria, an education policy analyst and candidate for Office No. 2, has received the endorsements of the Democratic Party of San Fernando Valley; the Sherman Oaks Democratic Club; the Northeast San Fernando Valley Democratic Club; the West Hollywood Democratic Club, and the Latino Peace Officers Assn.

Jeff Shane, a Beverly Hills attorney and candidate for Office No. 6, will hold a press conference Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Mabe Restaurant, 8722 W. 3rd St. Shane will introduce representatives from corporations who have expressed an interest in corporate involvement in the Community College system. The Rev. Earl Hazley, Director of the Baptist Ministers conferences has endorsed Shane.

BALLOT MEASURES

The American Jewish Committee’s Los Angeles executive board has endorsed Proposition 2, a $176-million bond issue for improved police facilities and the 911 emergency phone system, and Proposition 3, a $100-million bond measure that would provide funds to make old, low-income housing earthquake safe and provide shelters for the homeless. Councilwoman Ruth Galanter and Secretary of State March Fong Eu, who both suffered violent attacks by intruders in their homes, campaigned Tuesday for Proposition 2.
