A man who had been setting up cones for a traffic study on the Ventura Freeway was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near Westlake Village, authorities said today. David Alan Ewing, 27, of Simi Valley was getting into his truck after leaving cones along the southbound lanes of the freeway near Westlake Boulevard when he was hit by a passing car at 11:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Ewing, a contract worker for the California Department of Transportation conducting a study on the weight of vehicles on the freeway, died at the scene, officials said.

A Volkswagen believed to be the one that struck Ewing was later found abandoned near Agoura Hills. Authorities were looking for the woman who was reported to have been driving it.

Shortly after the accident, a woman driving the Volkswagen was stopped at Lindero Canyon Road and Agoura Road and questioned by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was conducting a routine check, officials said.

The deputy, who had not heard about the accident, let the woman go after questioning her about damage to the front of the car and filling out a field interview report. He later gave the woman’s name to CHP officers.
