Fond of Chiffon

Geena Davis wore some pretty offbeat-looking outfits in “The Accidental Tourist,” but for her real-life wardrobe, she went to Ecru on Melrose Avenue and carried off a mound of the season’s hottest look--chiffons. Among her purchases: a translucent, red tunic by London’s John Galliano, a long, black skirt by Los Angeles’ Selwyn and Peck, a peach-colored blouse by Costume National of Milan and a cream-colored blouse by Ana Salazar, based in Portugal. They’re for her summer wardrobe, reports Paul Burdich, a spokesman for the store.

Ushering In New Uniforms

Earlier this week the Hollywood Bowl announced that none other than Ralph Lauren was designing their new usher’s uniforms. But our queries to Bowl press director Norma Flynn set off a scramble that ended with a few, um, changes in the story. It seems Lauren did not design a special uniform. Instead, Terry Pillow, Chaps by Ralph Lauren president, put together an ensemble made up of ready-to-wear styles and donated the outfits to Bowl ushers and service personel. The essentials are khaki pants, a blue Oxford shirt, a regimental-stripe tie and a fisherman-knit cardigan for those chilly nights. Flynn adds that one part of the outfit actually is exclusive--the necktie and scarf now being designed for Bowl personnel. “We’ll also sell it in our gift shop,” Flynn says.

Ooh La La Ali

Remember Ali MacGraw’s short, blunt haircut for the Oscars? It could be the cut this summer. Hairdresser Jose Eber reports that since he cut the actress’s hair, all three of his salons (Beverly Hills, Beverly Center and Palm Desert) have been deluged with requests. He calls the look “boyish yet feminine.” Here’s how he describes it: “Ooh la la it’s the way young boys wore their hair in ‘Chariots of Fire,’ quite long on top and short all around. Ali sometimes wears hers slicked back. It’s not so revolutionary, but the whole package that night looked great.”

A Word on Wardy

Beverly Hills may soon have its very own palatial Amen Wardy boutique. Although Newport Beach-based Wardy declined comment, the talk at the Beverly Hills Hotel is that the retailer extraordinaire is branching out and plans to take over 11,000 square feet of space once Tiffany, the fine jewelers, moves across the street. Victoria Yust, director of public relations for the hotel, tells us Wardy’s arrival is almost a sure thing, “although it’s still in negotiation and depends upon when Tiffany will be leaving.”

Two Sides of Sheena

Color Sheena Easton fun, funky and feminine. Throw in some flowers too, which is what the singer did during a tour of the Benetton store on Melrose Avenue. Manager Laura Lee Bocquet says Easton bought a neon-green, floral-printed spandex miniskirt (that was the funky-fun bit) as well as an ankle-length, flower-strewn dress. But we think by virtue of these purchases--black sweat pants and some basic T-shirts--she must also be the practical, athletic sort.

King on the Road

While Beverly Hills’ “Golden Triangle” becomes more European-ized by the day, yet another local institution is departing. In this case it’s a person: Jack King. King has catered to the offspring of the rich and famous for 20 years as owner of Tipperary, the children’s hair salon. While the shop will continue to serve the small fry (King sold it to hairdresser Deborah Bair), the affable King has packed up and moved to Calabasas, where last month he opened Cowlicks, a children’s hair salon-cum-kiddie restaurant. Why the move from BH? Says King: “It’s more commercial now and the small-town atmosphere is gone. It’s more an adult city. There used to be more families.” The trend now, as he sees it, is for families to move west, to the San Fernando Valley.
