SOVIET GEORGIA AT A GLANCE

Here are some facts and figures on the Soviet republic of Georgia, where ethnic disputes and nationalist demonstrations prompted authorities to send in tanks and troops:

THE LAND: Located north of Turkey in Caucasus Mountains in southern Soviet Union. Bordered by republics of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. At 27,000 square miles, it is about size of South Carolina. Includes Abkhazian Autonomous Republic on Black Sea coast, Ajar Autonomous Republic and South Ossetian Autonomous Region.

THE PEOPLE: About 70% of its 5.3 million people are Georgian. Among minority ethnic groups, 9% are Armenian, 7% Russian, 5% Azerbaijanis and 1.7% Abkhazian.

THE ECONOMY: A major resort area, it is also fruit and vegetable basket of Soviet Union. Also has mining and industry.

POLITICAL STATUS: One of 15 republics making up Soviet Union. Activists are calling for secession. Abkhazia is an “autonomous republic” under authority of Georgia, but activists there want it to become 16th republic of Soviet Union.

HISTORY: One of oldest nations in Soviet Union, with records dating back to 3rd Century BC. Became Christian in AD 318. Became part of Russian empire in 1800 to gain protection from Persians. Became part of Soviet Union in 1921.
